Grid City Warriors pulled off a stunning upset on Sunday, lifting the 2024/25 Bill Johnson Trophy in just their first official season as a club. Facing OB City — a well-established side playing two leagues above — the underdogs refused to read the script, battling to a dramatic 2–2 draw before clinching victory on penalties.
OB City, known across the region for their community work and on-pitch success, came into the final as heavy favourites. But Grid City Warriors, formed less than a year ago, weren’t interested in reputation. They brought heart, hunger, and belief — and proved every doubter wrong.
The match was played at Buckingham Football Club, and the occasion didn’t disappoint. With fans from both sides cheering passionately, the Warriors matched OB City in every department, refusing to back down against more experienced opposition.
The 90 minutes saw goals from both sides, finishing 2–2 in regular time. The Warriors’ resilience was on full display as they continued to push, even after conceding. The team’s tactical discipline and togetherness were clear for all to see.
With the match heading to a penalty shootout, the pressure was on — but the Warriors were ready.
It was Stephen Gavrovski who stepped up and coolly converted the winning penalty, sparking wild celebrations from teammates and fans. His leadership throughout the tournament has been key, and his final contribution was the perfect ending to a historic day.
Also featuring in the win was club founder Tariq Nikoi-Kotey, who played an important role on the pitch — a proud moment in a journey that started as an idea and turned into a trophy-winning reality.
Earlier that week, the Warriors narrowly lost 3–2 in the Division One Challenge Trophy Final, but showed incredible mental strength to bounce back and secure silverware just hours later.
“Everyone expected us to lose today. But we proved what this team is made of,” said Tariq after the final whistle.
For a club only in its debut season, this win is more than just a trophy — it’s a signal of intent. Grid City Warriors are building something special.
